A solid state relay is basically a small electronic switch device. A much larger current or voltage is controlled through a small control signal. A solid state relay holds many important advantages over mechanical relays.

Solid state relays are much faster than their electromechanical counterparts. The benefits have much to do with the fact that there are no moving parts. Since there are no moving parts in solid state relays they last much longer. This holds true no matter how many times they are used. This is of the utmost importance when using relays in environments that utilize fuels or other explosives.
