I have never been one for using free calling apps, programs or hardware for my house. I have Skype downloaded on my iPhone and computer but never use it. While searching for apps last week I came across netTalk a free long distance app that allows you to make calls in the US and Canada for free. The bonus is that it doesn't use your minutes and obviously there are no long distance charges.
I was out in the middle of no mans land working last week and had to make a couple of calls that would have racked up some decent long distance charges. The app worked perfectly and I was able to make my calls with no problems and the sound quality was excellent. A few reviews I have read users are reporting an echo when talking.
While the app will import your contact list it's pretty much useless because you have to dial 1 + area code + number for a call to work otherwise you get an error that the number can't be reached. It would be nice if they upgraded the app with a setting to add 1 to every number dialed. That aside it is still pretty nice to get free long distance and for this I can always dial my own numbers.
You have to create an account at their site to use the app but that takes about a minute.
